The project PRELUDIUM, entitled “PiezoMat: Bio-inspired Smart Scaffolds for Real-Time Monitoring of Biological Processes of Neural Tissue Regeneration”, focuses on the development of advanced piezoelectric materials for neural tissue engineering.
The main objective of PiezoMat is to design multilayer piezoelectric scaffolds with controlled architecture and functional properties. The structures will be fabricated using techniques including electrospinning and 3D printing, enabling precise control over material organization and polar-phase content. Particular attention will be given to understanding how processing conditions affect the structure, piezoelectric response, biocompatibility, and interactions of the developed materials with neural cells. An important aspect of the project will be the use of ultrasound stimulation to remotely activate the piezoelectric response of the scaffolds and investigate its effects on cell viability and behaviour. By combining material design, advanced fabrication techniques, and biological studies, PiezoMat aims to provide a deeper understanding of polar-phase formation and identify optimal processing conditions for developing functional piezoelectric materials for neural tissue regeneration.
